OHMYGOSH, OHMYGOSH you dear, sweet spirit you. Ruth, my heart goes out to you! I've not had surgery but just wanted to extend WELCOME and offer my very best energies and encouragement to you!
I work for an all-natural physician and one thing that may help you heal a little faster, try drinking MUCH extra water for awhile (sorry I know that will cause more powder room wrestling) and, if you aren't already, get on a really good multi-vitamin. Outside of that, you'd have to consult with an herbologist perhaps, but there are a great many excellent natural remedies and boosters for helping your body to function at peak performance.
Oh, but please do try to do as Adam suggested! Be a "lady of leisure" for just a little while, cuz you can't heal up all over again. If you've got anyone who can be a companion for a little that sure would be great for your hands.
Everyone heals at their own unique pace. I hope you won't become too discouraged.
