if you have a cast or a brace on your hand that will protect it. if just a bandage then you'll have to be more careful. when your son sees your bandage, or whatever, he'll understand you have an owie and hopefully he'll be careful. but you'll have to be very cautious as you know children forget! my grandchildren were curious and I was able to take the brace off to show them the scar.

for preparation--others will respond but also you can read old posts for information, some of the subject lines will let you know what the content is.

you'll be using your left hand for many things so you might start practicing now. I still use my left hand to work the mouse and am pretty good at it. my surgery was Oct. 28. I was able to use the fingers of my right hand (with the brace after mini-open surgery) to do the necessary pulling-up-of-pants, etc.

part of the healing will depend on what kind of surgery you've having--endoscope, open, mini-open.
