Casting is surgeon's preference. Most don't bother, they just make the bandages sufficiently bulky that bending the wrist is just about impossible. It's also common for them to use a plaster "splint" with bandaging. The plaster form is like the metal form in an elastic splint, providing stability. My dad had those when he had his done years and years ago. All I had when i had my first ctr done 8 years ago was the bulky bandaging routine.
