She virtually has no feeling in her fingers and is not able to do most common tasks requiring use of the fingers. My questions are: 1. how long is the recuperation after surgery? - are you able to use your hands at all? 2.Do they usually do one hand at a time? 3. What kind of anesthesia is used? (a general would be a problem for my mom)4. Is there anyone out there who has had this surgery in their 80's? : Thanks for your response, clk Hi CLK, The first question you asked is that it takes 6 to 8 weeks to even be able to turn a doorknob, start an ignition on a car, turn bottle caps and many other task we take for granted. The second question is that it's best to do one hand at a time. I'm sure that your mom has you or others for daily helps but if shes is independent, she will want to try things on her own. I had a young friend that had both hands done at the same time because she wanted to get it over with. She had her husband there with her two weeks to dress, bathe and take care of her personal hygiene. It can be done but would be very trying. I had general anesthesia but the surgery can be done with blocks. Thats where they put a tourniquet on her arm, pump it up to a certain degree, then mildly sedate her and do the surgery. I do have a special friend that had no sedation at all though, so I guess it depends on the doctor. Personally I don't know of anyone on this board or friends that have been that old having CT surgery. If she were my mom, I would try all the alternative methods first, Splints, anti-inflamatory meds, such as Advil, Ice and heat treatments and massages. At her age, it would be a heartache to suffer the surgery. I hope this helps and I know theres others on this board that can give better advice. Take care of your mom, their pretty special women.
